ABOUT afrika-center

We envision a Berlin where African voices are visible and valued.

Afrika-Center Berlin is an institution of the German Province of the Missionaries of Afrika, officially inaugurated on October 1, 1996, by Cardinal Georg Sterzinsky, then Archbishop of Berlin. Since its foundation, the Center has served as a place of encounter, solidarity, and hope for Africans and people of African descent living in Berlin.

Located in the heart of an intercultural and international city, Afrika-Center was created to support especially vulnerable Africans who have recently arrived in Berlin or are seeking to build a secure and dignified life within German society. But also important are acts of welcome in their fullest sense — acts that promote the progressive integration, participation, and self-sufficiency of migrants. Over the years, the Center has grown into more than a support institution; it is a listening space, a meeting place, and a home away from home for many.

Rooted in the values of justice, peace, dignity, and compassion, Afrika-Center walks alongside refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented migrants, students, professionals, families, prisoners, and second-generation Afro-European youth. We believe that every person deserves respect, visibility, protection, and the opportunity to participate fully in society without losing their cultural identity and human dignity.

As a faith-based organization, we are inspired by the belief that true solidarity means being present with people in both their struggles and their hopes. We do not work for people from above; we work with them, side by side, strengthening self-determination, resilience, and community leadership.

Afrika-Center offers a safe and welcoming environment where Africans in Berlin and beyond can find orientation, accompaniment, cultural connection, intercultural dialogue, and practical support.

Through legal assistance, social initiatives, humanitarian outreach, cultural programs, and partnerships across Berlin, we continue to promote inclusion, mutual understanding, and active participation in society.

We envision a Berlin where African voices are visible and valued, where diversity becomes strength, and where no one is left invisible or isolated. Together, we are building a community founded not on charity, but on dignity, justice, solidarity, and shared humanity.
